GEOLOGICAL

Quartz is a hexagonal crystalline mineral composed of Silica. It is one of the most abundant minerals on earth. Quartz vibrates at a very specific frequency. This, combined with its general hardness and durability, heat resistance and electrical properties, has made it one of the most useful crystals in the modern world. Quartz crystals can be found in numerous colours and in beautiful shapes, sizes and hues.

 

Chiredzi crystals get their name from the town of Chiredzi, where they were first found in 2017. Also known as Shangaan crystals. Chiredzi crystals are complex Quartz crystals, which look very much like Brandbergs.

Common characteristics include:

• Dark Amethyst and/or Smoky hues.
• Hematite specular or needle-like inclusions.
• Skeletal / window, double terminated, and sceptre formations.

The name ‘Herkimer Diamond’ refers to a specific type of Quartz crystal discovered in Herkimer County, New York. They tend to have beautiful clarity and be very short, stubby and double-terminated.

Since their discovery, the term ‘Herkimer’ has been used to describe the specific look of a crystal and not just the crystals coming from this original area. It is important to separate whether the name is being used to describe the formation & look of a crystal, or the place of origin (Herkimer County). In this case, it is being used to describe the look & formation.
