Lovely crystal point with Amethyst colour zoning and flecks of Hematite creating the Harlequin formation. Excellent clarity, with some growth interference on one side. From Brandberg, Namibia. Good to A Grade. Size approx 5cm. Weight approx 14g.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Amethyst is the name for purple to violet Quartz crystal. Its name is derived from the Greek ‘amethystos’, loosely translating to ‘not drunk’. The name relates to the ancient belief that this stone could protect its wearer from intoxication.

Amethyst owes its colour to the inclusion of trace amounts of iron in the Quartz crystal lattice – and radiation! Deep inside the earth are natural radioactive minerals, which release gamma radiation into their surroundings when they decay. When Quartz with iron is exposed to the radiation, the iron atoms are transformed and change the colour of the Quartz from clear to purple.

 

Brandberg is perhaps one the most collectible localities for Quartz in the world. These specimens tend to have exceptional clarity, often with Amethyst and/or Smoky wisps and colour zones, also often with enhydros or skeletal features.

The clusters occur in basalt vugs associated to volcanic activity. They are mined on a small scale, by multiple individuals, across a very wide geographic area.

The range includes Gebobos, where Brandberg crystals are actually from, located in the northwestern Namib Desert. Since Brandberg mountain itself is a protected national park.

 

Harlequin Quartz is a tradename for a variety of Hematite included Quartz, where the Hematite occurs as tiny red flecks in a clear Quartz matrix.
