Featuring double / multi terminations, scepter, skeleton, dolphin, warrior tip and more. Larger specimens like this of good quality are quite rare. The colour and clarity are really gorgeous! Very cool formations. From Chiredzi, Zimbabwe. Very Good to A Grade.

 

GEOLOGICAL

Chiredzi crystals are named after the town of Chiredzi where they were first discovered in 2017. Also known as Shangaan crystals. Chiredzi crystals are complex Quartz crystals, which look very much like Brandbergs.

Common characteristics include:

• Dark Amethyst and/or Smoky hues.
• Hematite specular or needle like inclusions are often seen.
• Skeletal / window, double terminated, and sceptre formations.

Amethyst is the name for purple to violet Quartz crystal. Its name is derived from the Greek ‘amethystos’. This loosely translates to ‘not drunk’. The name relates to the ancient belief that this stone could protect its wearer from intoxication.

It owes its colour to the inclusion of trace amounts of iron in the Quartz crystal lattice. When the Quartz is exposed to gamma irradiation (from naturally decaying radioactive minerals in the earth), the iron atoms are transformed, resulting in the colour change from clear Quartz crystal to purple Amethyst.

 

Smoky Quartz is a variety of Quartz that contains Aluminium and has been exposed to natural radiation in the earth, from radioactive rock around it. As the crystal is irradiated, the colour centers around the Aluminium in the Quartz are activated. The material develops a smoky colour, variably ranging from a light smoky hue to almost opaque black (known as ‘Morion’ Smoky), and sometimes with orange to brown hues.
