Amethyst Spirit Quartz Crystal Cluster 6.5cm.

Gorgeous deep purple Amethyst hue with some minor Ametrine tones. The large majority of Spirit Quartz is white, or pale lavender. Finding clusters with darker Amethyst tones is always a win! Slightly bigger-sized primary points in this batch too. Plus they are 90% intact with very minor damage. Professionally cleaned. Sparkly and pretty! From Boekenhouthoek, South Africa. GEOLOGICAL

Spirit Quartz, also called Cactus Quartz, is the name for a special formation of Quartz that has only been found in South Africa. Amethyst Spirit Quartz is seen as one of the top classic types of Quartz, however it represents only 1% of the deposits mined, as the bulk found is white with subtle variations.

Primary Quartz crystals are covered in a secondary drusy coating of small Quartz points that extend all the way up to the faces, leaving the tip of the original crystal point free. The secondary crystals point away (outwards) from the main crystal, unlike elestials or cascading crystals which flow up towards to tip or, less often, down to its base.

Amethyst is the name for purple to violet Quartz crystal. Its name is derived from the Greek ‘amethystos’, loosely translating to ‘not drunk’. The name relates to the ancient belief that this stone could protect its wearer from intoxication.

Amethyst owes its colour to the inclusion of trace amounts of iron in the Quartz crystal lattice – and radiation! Deep inside the earth are natural radioactive minerals, which release gamma radiation into their surroundings when they decay. When the Quartz with iron gets exposed to the radiation, the iron atoms are transformed. Thus the colour of the Quartz changes from clear to purple.
