First published in 1910, the Rider-Waite® Tarot is literally THE original tarot deck. This is a deck that is beloved by tarot beginners and experienced readers alike. Includes a short instruction booklet. This version has the bright primary colour palette and a checked back.

 

Due to the clarity and precision of its symbolism, it is the most successful and enduring tarot deck in the world. Because of this, almost all subsequent decks are modelled on it. And students generally referred to it as the deck of choice to learn from.

 

With full pictorial scenes on every card of the Major and Minor Arcana, the Rider-Waite Tarot set the standard for hundreds of other tarot decks around the world. It was first illustrated in 1909 by Pamela Colman Smith, while under the direction of magician Arthur Edward Waite. Clearly, the vibrant drawings of this tarot deck hold timeless appeal.

 

DIFFERENT RIDER WAITE TAROT DECK VERSIONS

The publishers have released many different versions of the deck with minor differences over the last +100 years. All decks under the Rider-Waite® Tarot title have the same original imagery from the original artist Pamela Colman Smith. The primary differences are changes to the colour palette, the style of the back of the cards, and sometimes the borders of the cards.

We generally stock these versions:

• The ‘Original Rider-Waite® Tarot Deck‘. The original colour palette, which has more muted tones. This deck has a Tudor roses design on the back.
• The ‘Rider Tarot Deck®‘. The most iconic version in our age, the deck with the Magician on the box. This deck has brighter primary colours and a checked back.
• The ‘Radiant Rider-Waite® Tarot Deck‘. Recoloured by artist Virginijus Poshkus to be more vibrant. It has a bit more shading and the linework is less thick, giving the images a bit more depth. This deck has a blue sky and stars back.
