Introduction
Before we can discuss the healing properties of Shungite I want to give you a better idea of what this stone is all about.
Shungite is a fascinating, extremely rare stone with a long list of properties, including purifying water, anti-inflammation,-viral, -bacterial, and anti-oxidant, protecting from EMF and relieving stress.
By page 11 of my notes into the research of Shungite and Fullerenes, I decided to name this article “SHUNGITE: THE MAGICAL RABITHOLE INTO AWESOMENESS”. After my brain had been melted by yet another medical study calmly discussing the truly sci-fi sounding nano-tech scientific properties that fullerenes possess.
I realised I was going to have to find a way to sum this all up for you guys… In a way that didn’t require having 20 tabs open on your computer following one study to the next, while still succinctly carrying over the facts.
So, here’s my brain-melted sum-up:
What Is It?
THE HIGHLIGHTS:
- Shungite is a black, lustrous, amorphous (non-crystalline) stone.
- Mineralogically it consists of almost pure carbon. It also contains trace amounts of a “secret spice” called fullerenes.
- Fullerenes are very rare and fascinating particles which originally scientists thought were only theoretical. They have amazing healing and nanotech capabilities. READ MORE ABOUT FULLERENES HERE
- It was first described (and named) from a deposit near Shunga Village in Karelia, Russia. And it’s still primarily found in Russia.
- Shungite is generally identified as either Elite / Noble (which looks metallic) or Classic (which doesn’t), depending on the percentage of carbon content in the rock. READ MORE ON GRADES HERE
- It is believed to be at least 600 million to 2 billion years old.
- AKA: Schungite, Schungit, Shungit

CARBON
Humble carbon is the primary content of Shungite. It’s also the building material for our planet and the basis of all living organisms on Earth.
Carbon has the most Allotropes (i.e. modifications) of all the elements. Common examples of carbon allotropes are:
- Diamonds
- Graphite
- Carbyne
- The special Fullerenes found in Shungite

FULLERENES
A Fullerene is the name given to a particular formation that Carbon can take, an Allotrope. In other words, the way the Carbon atoms are arranged. It’s also called a ‘buckyball’.
Generally, they consist of 60, 70 or more carbon atoms (referred to as C60, C70 or Cn) bonded on 3 ends. Usually the atoms are bonded on 4 ends. It’s this special arrangement that’s considered super awesome to the scientists.
Until the 90’s, Fullerenes were only theorised to exist.

Scientists were basically like, “Carbon forms in so many shapes… But imagine if Carbon could form in this shape… Dude, the capabilities would be endless! It could change the world!” They’d never actually found or seen it in reality.
Then, they were accidentally synthesized in a laboratory, winning the scientists involved a Nobel Prize.
A few years later fullerenes were (again accidentally) discovered to actually exist in nature! In – you guessed it – Shungite bearing rocks.
I’ve dedicated a whole article to explaining more about fullerenes. You can read it HERE: WHAT ARE FULLERENES IN SHUNGITE?
The Origin Of Shungite
The origin of Shungite was shrouded in mystery for many years. Typically, carbon based structures occur through decayed organic matter like ancient forests. But since some Shungite rock is dated at around 2 billion years old, this means it had to have formed before organic life on earth! Some theories to its origins include:
- Life seeded from space! A large meteorite collided into Earth and deposited it into the ground.
- Shungite formed due to microorganisms in nearby water, such as swamp or wetland conditions.
- The composition of organic matter in sedimentary rocks changed over time – perhaps the growth of mycorrhizal networks of emerging fungi.
“In 2010, the spectral signatures of C60 and C70 were observed by NASA’s Spitzer infrared telescope in a cloud of cosmic dust surrounding a star 6500 light years away. According to astronomer Letizia Stanghellini, “It’s possible that buckyballs from outer space provided seeds for life on Earth.”

It’s currently accepted by most scientists that Shungite was most likely formed from emerging fungi / microorganisms rather than space… But I much prefer the fun of that one 😉
Shungite History
Peter the Great (the last Emperor of all Russias) is generally credited with bringing Russia ‘into the modern age’ during his time as Czar from 1682 – 1725.
Aside from implementing a variety of reforms – including revamping the Russian calendar and alphabet – he also built Russia’s first healing spa. Using Shungite.
Before science had even *imagined* that fullerenes could exist, the former Emperor had also used this magical stone to purify water for the whole Russian army.
He was well aware of its unique anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory and all round purifying and healing properties. Peter’s also said to have made all soldiers carry a piece on them to help their wounds heal faster.
Go Peter.

Modern Uses
Shungite has impressive healing and purification properties. And thanks to its naturally occurring trace elements of fullerenes (C60), this stone is possibly one of the most scientifically researched rocks around.
“Due to its specific physical and chemical properties, shungite is widely used in metallurgy, water purification, thermolysis, etc. Shungite is also a sorbent for removal of many pathogenic bacteria and heavy metals from contaminated water.“
Krasnovyd, Serhii Volodymyrovich et al. “Local structure and paramagnetic properties of the nanostructured carbonaceous material shungite.” Nanoscale research letters vol. 10
I came across a wealth of studies currently being conducted on the incredibly cool nanotechnology applications of fullerenes. Everything from:
- a targeted treatment delivery system in the human body (think medicine delivered straight into the infected cells, rather than blanketing the whole body), to
- armour and shielding (think scifi nanosuits for astronauts),
- water purification systems,
- radiation shielding (hospital applications, building, even spaceships)
- and more.
Shungite Healing Properties
So lets take a look at Shungite’s vaunted healing properties!
- Kill bacteria & viruses. Destroying harmful pathogens by damaging the cell walls of bacteria and viruses.
- Purify water. Studies have shown that it can filter water by removing contaminants and organic substances like pesticides, and even radioactive compounds.
- Reverse oxidative stress. While additional research is required, initial studies show that it has strong antioxidant properties. And can even potentially reverse oxidative stress and skin damage.
- Reduce Inflammation. Applied topically in solution, has been found to lower levels of inflammatory markers, including proteins involved in inflammation.
- Shielding. Some believe that it can potentially protect you from EMF radiation emitted from cellphones, modems and other electronic devices.
- Insulation. In the 1970’s it was used to make a substance called shungisite which was used as a low density filler in insulation.
Does Shungite Block EMF & 5G?
There’s no concrete, widely accepted science to prove EMF & 5G are harmful OR that anything can “block” the supposed harmful emissions. It’s even illegal to advertise anything does. If you believe they are or might be harmful regardless of current studies, this is the stone we’d suggest you use to put your mind at ease. With studies into nanotech shielding and armour, its properties definitely align with this purpose.
Personally, I am not ‘EMF sensitive’. However I still take steps to protect myself and my environment from as much electronic noise & radiation as possible. Why? Simply because I don’t like the idea of it on an intuitive level. I can’t see how it is *good* for us, even if they haven’t been able to prove (yet?) that it’s not explicitly *bad* for us. That’s my call, and yours is up to you.
We use Shungite in our office and home.
What Is EMF?
From a metaphysical standpoint, Shungite has probably been most noted for its superior ability to block EMF (electro-magnetic field/frequency).
EMF is a type of radiation emitted by all things electronic, from your cellphone to your modem to your microwave.
Many people claim to be ‘EMF sensitive’, in that exposure to EMF causes physical symptoms of illness. Headaches, rashes, lack of energy and nausea have been reported by hundreds of thousands of sufferers.
Many people believe that EMF exposure is toxic and/or harmful to the body (both physically and energetically). Even though we may not see immediate proof or feel immediate effects. Because of this, there’s been a lot of concern around the launch of 5G and the amount of EMF in the environment it is generating.
However we must note: Despite many blind studies, negative effects or sensitivity have yet to be proven by science.
THIS WIKI ARTICLE has lots of links to studies that you can go look through for yourself. (Whether you’re a believer in Wiki as a source of information or not, the list of studies collected for the article that you can check out individually is very useful).
Using Shungite’s Healing Properties
We’ve currently got a Shungite pyramid on our internet modem, as well as the cellphone discs on our phones. And Russ & I are both wearing a beautiful rough piece of Elite Noble necklaces.
We are also planning to use the Classic as water purification here on the MC Farmstead.

USES:
- Wear as jewellery, or carry on your person or even in your bag or pocket
- Use to grid your property, home, office or specific areas
- Place in healing grids on grid mats or on-the-body healing
- Put on your electronic equipment (like your cellphone, modem, computer etc)
- Make purified water for drinking
- Place next to your bed for a good night’s rest, or use in your sacred space during meditation for its purification and protection properties.
