What Is Kolwezite?

Kolwezite is a trade name for crystal specimens consisting of variable combinations of minerals from Musinoi Mine in Kolwezi, Katanga. These rare and unique specimens occur in the oxidized copper-cobalt hydrothermal ore deposits. While pink Colbalto Calcite crystals on Dolomite (aka SALROSE) are well known specimens from this geological setting, Kolwezite differs broadly in composition combinations.

Mineral combinations of variably Dolomite, Zinc, Cobalt, Nickel and Copper occur. With common associations including drusy Quartz, Azurite, Shattuckite, Chrysocolla and Malachite.

The massive array of possible variables and combinations means that Kolwezite specimens can be found in a wide range of colours. They generally occur with a sparkling drusy coating on a matrix. Very fun to collect!
