This month’s featured crystal is Chiredzi Quartz, hailing from the region in and around Chiredzi in Zimbabwe. This is a stunning range of Quartz with features very similar to world famous Brandberg Quartz. Read on to learn more about its geological and crystal healing properties!

Geological Properties

You’d be forgiven for thinking the specimens above are Brandberg crystals.

That’s because Chiredzi Quartz looks strikingly similar to one of the world’s most famous, sought after and collected Quartz in the world. And I think they are going to grow in value in the same way.

Discovered quite recently in about 2017, Chiredzi Quartz is named after the town it was found near. It’s also known internationally as Shangaan Quartz or Shangaan Amethyst.

Common physical features found with these crystals:

• Dark Amethyst and/or Smoky colour zoning and phantoms, else super high clarity clear Quartz.
• Hematite specular or needle like inclusions are often seen.
• Common formations include skeletal / windows, double terminateds and sceptres.
• New growth over older crystals is very common

So far, the main difference between Chiredzis and Brandbergs (apart from location) is that Chiredzi Quartz hasn’t yet been found as large specimens. Good quality crystals all tend to be on the smaller size. They also often feature a lot more new crystals growing on older, more worn crystals.

Collecting

As I’ve mentioned, Chiredzi Quartz is very similar in many ways to the type of Quartz crystals collectors seek out from the Brandberg region of Namibia. High levels of clarity, beautiful depth of colour when Amethyst purple zones or Smoky zones occur, awesome inclusions and fascinating formations combine to make this a highly collectable variety.

Just like Brandberg Quartz, I think this is going to continue to increase in value over the years. Especially if bigger pockets aren’t discovered.

Since big specimens have so far been extremely minimal, and generally low quality, look out for nice biggish specimens as good investment pieces. Watch out for “manufactured” (glued) pieces – only buy from reputable dealers. You can test a specimen for glue by using a UV torch.

Metaphysical

Chiredzi crystals have the inherent properties of Quartz, as well as Amethyst and Smoky Quartz if these are present. Hematite inclusions add this mineral’s magic to the mix.
